6 Common Scaffolding Myths — Busted
Is it really true?
Scaffolding can sometimes seem confusing if you’ve never needed it before, and there are a few common misconceptions we hear regularly. At TomRed Scaffolding Ltd, we like to keep things clear, honest and simple — so here are six scaffolding myths we’re putting straight.

Myth 1: “Scaffolding will damage my property.”
Reality:
When scaffolding is erected by trained and competent scaffolders, it does not damage your property.
We use:
- Non-invasive fixings
- Protective measures where needed
- Approved load-bearing techniques
We don’t drill into your walls unless absolutely necessary — and if we do (for certain structural requirements), we make good afterwards.
Our priority is protecting your home, not impacting it.

Myth 2: “Once it’s up, I’ll be stuck with it there for ages.”
Reality:
This is a common worry, but it’s not how we work.
Most scaffolding jobs include a standard hire period (usually around 6 weeks). If your project needs longer, we agree weekly hire costs upfront — so you always know exactly where you stand.
And once your work is finished?
Just tell us — we’ll schedule removal promptly, so you’re not left with scaffolding any longer than necessary.

Myth 3: “Inspections aren’t required for domestic jobs.”
Reality:
All scaffolding must be safe, whether it’s at a home or a commercial site.
By law, scaffolds must be inspected:
- After installation
- Every 7 days
- After severe weather
- After any alterations
Once we have safely erected the scaffold and handed the project over, the legal responsibility for ongoing inspections sits with you (the client) or the contractor using the scaffold. If required we can carry out inspections for you (for an agreed fee).

Myth 4: “It’s just steel poles — it shouldn’t cost much.”
Reality:
Scaffolding isn’t just the metal you see. You’re paying for:
- Skilled labour and trained scaffolders
- Safety planning and design
- Equipment transport, installation and removal
- Insurance, compliance and inspection
Scaffolding is a specialist trade — it keeps everyone safe while work is done. It’s about safety and expertise, not just tubes and boards.

Myth 5: “It’s fine to move or adjust the scaffold myself.”
Reality:
Never, ever move or alter scaffolding yourself.
Even a small adjustment can:
- Make the scaffold unsafe
- Increase the risk of falls
- Breach safety regulations
- Make insurance invalid
If you need something changed, adapted or adjusted — just call us. We’ll come out and do it safely, (however small the job) and we'll let you know in advance if there's any additional charge for this.

Myth 6: “All scaffolding companies are the same.”
Reality:
Standards vary hugely across the industry.
When choosing a scaffolding contractor, always look for:
- Clear, transparent pricing (no hidden extras)
- Skilled, fully trained CISRS professionals
- Full insurance cover
- Respectful and reliable service
- A good reputation and consistent reviews
At TomRed Scaffolding Ltd, our family values and reputation guide everything we do — every job matters.
